As A Member Of 1% for the Planet
It’s no secret that, here at Callosum, we love to be outside. At the same time, as a business, the industry often sits inside working while using our planet’s precious resources for projects, events, and campaigns. Callosum is a member of 1% for the Planet to make up for this frustrating quandary. Read more about what that means to us:
What is 1% for the Planet?
In 2002, 1% for the Planet was founded by some people you may know. Do Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, the founder of Blue Ribbon Flies, ring a bell? To start this global movement, the two men, with a shared love for the outdoors, decided to give 1% of their sales back to the environment—profitable or not.
The idea was rooted in the idea that because companies profit from the resources they take from the earth, they should protect those resources.
They connect members with nonprofit partners that align with their values. Through the partnership advising process, 1% for the Planet helps over 3,000 members be connected with the right non-profit partners that come together to protect the planet.
Their stated mission: “We bring dollars and doers together to accelerate smart environmental giving.” Are you a doer or a dollar? How can you, as an individual or a business, accelerate smart environmental giving?
What does it mean to Callosum to be a member of 1% for the Planet?
We’re committed to doing business for good. While we are busy at the office building brands, we know that donating to non-profit organizations, who are experts in their own arena, are helping us to live the Callosum values. Since joining 1% for the Planet in January of 2020, we stay tapped into the community, the industry, and climate advocacy. In addition to doing our singular personal part, we rely on the NPOs to be committed to creating change on a daily basis.
Here are the perks for 1% for the Planet business members.
How does 1% for the Planet hold members accountable?
Callosum is required to submit a tax return to 1% for the Planet annual to confirm gross revenue. Alongside, we provide donation receipts which show we have donated 1% of our revenue to the selected non-profits chosen annually. 1% for the Planet does the math to verify that we have indeed donated 1% of our revenue. And with this, we are allowed to share the membership icon to you.
What are the things Callosum looks for in a charity?
We have three focuses: Local community, inclusion in the outdoor community, and climate advocacy. Stay tuned for our next few blogs to hear more about this year’s chosen NPOs:
- Protect Our Winters (POW)
- Melanin Basecamp
What are some of the notable brands that are members of 1% for the Planet?
We are just a small part of thousands of other companies, non-profits, and individuals that donate 1% of their income to this organization. You may recognize brands like Patagonia, Honest Tea, New Belgium Brewing, and Klean Kanteen. We are honored to be a part of a growing community that feels passionately about giving back.
There’s a saying – time, talent, or treasure. We’d like to hear, where do you like to give? To do business for good.
